Hi Preppy Girl,
I am a young prep and for my school’s final dance our committee chose the theme “Hipster vs. Prepster.” Everyone knows I would be a great prepster but I want to know what exactly would be good to wear for a summer dance without wearing a formal dress. I know what would generally be cute but I don’t know how to put it all together.

That dance sounds like so much fun! I think you should go all out for the dance and channel your retro prep. Think 1980s, pearls, pink, and green. Use Lilly Pulitzer as your prep inspiration. Look for a fun sun dress with stripes or a preppy print. Pair the dress with sandals for a more casual look. If you are going for a more informal style, a polo, khaki skirt, and needlepoint or grosgrain belt is a classic preppy outfit. Finish off the look with a cute pair of espadrilles, ballet flats, or boat shoes. For dances, I recommend bringing a clutch handbag in a bright color. Keep your hair and makeup simple and consider wearing a madras hairband for an extra preppy touch.
