Ask Preppy Girl – College Wardrobe

If you have a question for the Preppy Girl email it to me at preppygirl@thepreppylife.com.

Hi Preppy Girl,

I am a 17 year old senior who will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall. I want to go for the preppy look in college. I am new to preppy so I don’t know where I should shop for preppy clothing which is reasonably priced for a guy who is on a limited budget. I already own one pair of brown Sperry boat shoes and I’m planning on getting another pair. I have read articles around the web stating that a preppy guy must have a variety of polos, Sperrys, chino shorts, a pair or two of khaki’s, and a couple of oxford button downs. What am I missing from the previously stated? Also, which brand of polo’s should I get? And which brand of oxford button downs should I get?

Thanks A LOT!
– Newly Prep

Dear Newly Prep,

Congratulations on your admittance to the University of Michigan! My best piece of advice is to buy lots of clothing! Shirts, pants, t’s, socks and underwear. Doing laundry in college is a huge hassle. That being said, I would look for brands that you feel comfortable wearing. Sperry boat shoes are a great choice, they are comfortable and a classic. Since you already have a pair in brown, consider getting a pair in navy blue or the grey burnished leather. Make sure to pack a couple of belts (needlepoint belts are very preppy) and at least one tie. Vineyard Vines is a great place to look for some preppy inspiration. Also pack a blue blazer, in case you decide to join a fraternity, you never know when you will need to dress up for a date or formal occasion. For polos, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Lacoste are all great brands. Go to your local department store and try to shop the sales. Look for polo shirts in a variety of colors, stay away from white because it shows the stains. If you are looking for a more unique brand of polo check out Salmon Cove and Loggerhead Apparel. For oxford shirts I have always been a fan of J. Crew and Tommy Hilfiger. Look for shirts that feature a smaller pattern, they are much more versatile. Plaids and checks are a great way to go.  Make sure the shirts can go in the wash and be sure to invest in a few sweaters as well!

Good luck this fall!
