Boat Shoes

“Boat Shoes, the boys in the band are wearing boat shoes.” O.K., not really, but you get the idea. Recently, I was invited to spend the day sailing around the Chesapeake Bay. To celebrate the big occasion, my boyfriend bought a brand new pair of boat shoes. Scouring the shopping mall, perusing countless colors and styles, he decided to go with the ultimate in boatwear: the Sperry Top Sider, a staple of preppy fashion.

Sperry Top Siders

It’s All about the Siping
Impressed by his dog’s agile moves on the ice, Paul Sperry invented the boat shoe in 1935. Imitating the lines in his dog’s paws, Mr. Sperry cut hatches or siping into the soles of a pair of shoes. These lines enabled the soles to “grip” slippery boat decks. Seventy-five years later and the Top Sider is going strong.

Boat shoes have always been popular with the sailing crew and have grown to be considered fashionable footwear for land lovers as well. Sabago is currently celebrating the popular Docksides’ fortieth birthday. In recent years, Timberland, Tommy Bahama, Rockport, Ralph Lauren, Sabago, and even Crocs have gotten into the boat shoe game.
