Hello Preppy Girl,

I’m not poor, but my parents don’t get me a lot of clothes and think that I should use my own money. I love being preppy and it’s hard because I don’t own a lot of preppy clothes. I was looking for advice on things to get on the cheap side. I love Lilly Pulitzer, Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, and Vineyard Vines, but I just can’t afford $250 dresses.

Cheap Prep

Dear Cheap Prep,
I feel your pain. Clothing is expensive, especially all of the great preppy brands! I don’t remember the last time I bought clothing at full price. I typically try to shop all of the sales and use web coupons for additional discounts. Sign up for emails from all of your favorite brands, they often send discount codes and exclusive sales information. I also like to run a search on all of the coupon sites before making an online purchase, you never know what sales code might turn up. TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, and Loehmanns are great places to bargain hunt for designer clothes. I also like to shop Old Navy for basics like flips flops, ts, sweaters, and camis. And don’t forget your family, look through your sister’s, mother’s, and grandmother’s closets. You never know what preppy treasure you can find from cute cardigans to retro handbags. Just make sure to ask before borrowing! The Goodwill, secondhand stores, and eBay are also great sources for preppy clothes.
I hope that helps!

Hi Preppy Girl,

First things first, I love your blog! It’s so cute and helpful. I have a quick question: do real preps consider Abercrombie & Fitch “preppy”? I love timeless pieces like cardigans and blazers but I’m not sure if Abercrombie is preppy or not.

Fashion Conscious Prep

Dear Fashion Conscious Prep,

I love timeless pieces too, they never go out of style! Instead of shopping by brand, I suggest looking at the overall design of the clothing. Look for good material and classic tailoring. Abercrombie & Fitch does design some preppy-inspired clothing, however; it is not considered a traditionally preppy brand. Generally, preppy brands are more modest, clothing that you can visit your grandparents in. A few of the traditionally preppy brands include: Lilly Pulitzer, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Burberry, Lacoste, and Sperry.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi Preppy Girl,

I’m going off to a very preppy and prestigious college this fall and I want to make sure that I fit in with everyone. I love preppy clothing and accessories, but I’d like to know more brand names for clothing, bags, shoes, etc.! What are some key things you’d see a preppy college girl wearing? Sperry’s, Lacoste ?

Preppy Commodity Girl

Dear Preppy Commodity Girl,

Congratulations on your college acceptance! Unfortunately, preppy brands can get pretty pricey. I recommend looking for a couple signature pieces that really flaunt your preppy style. Here are a few of my favorite preppy brands. Lilly Pulitzer is a staple for preppy sun dresses especially down South. Vineyard Vines is another preppy brand that makes a variety of cute skirts and tops. J. Crew and Madewell are good places to find more stylish clothing for class and nights on the town. Lacoste is great choice for polo shirts. If you are looking for a more unique brand of polos check out COAST, Salmon Cove, Loggerhead Apparel, and the Tartan Terrier to name a few. A unique polo can be a great ice breaker. Once the weather turns cold, Burberry’s quilted jackets are the way to go.

For shoes, Sperry’s, TOMS, ballet flats, and espadrilles are all preppy shoe choices. Be sure to look for shoes that are easy to walk in, for those long hikes to class. For preppy accessories, Kiel James Patrick makes a very preppy line of bracelets, earring, and headbands. Instead of a book bag, use a preppy tote to carry your books. Look for a tote with sturdy handles that won’t rip apart when you are carrying a heavy load.

Have a wonderful time in college!

Hi Preppy Girl,

I really love your blog! I have a few questions to ask; where in America is the preppiest place to live? And also how can I change my life to have a more preppy lifestyle, clothes, car, schools, social group, and sports, anything and everything you can tell me!

Thank you,

Dear Blake,
Thanks for your kind words! There are so many preppy places to live that its hard to pinpoint the preppiest location. Preppy cities and towns are typically affluent areas on the east coast such as Nantucket, Massachusetts, Annapolis, Maryland, and Charleston, South Carolina. Preps are known for being clean-cut and are often spotted wearing classically-styled clothes in the summer like pastel polo shirts and madras shorts and skirts. Lilly Pulitzer, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, and Lacoste are just a few of the preppy brands.

Preps typically like to play sports such as lacrosse, field hockey, sailing, tennis, golf, and crew, and socialize at the local country club. For more information about being a prep, check out Prep Essentials and Preppy Style 101.

Have a great summer!

Hey Preppy Girl,

Are there any brands or styles we should absolutely avoid as a preppy girl?

Thanks so much,
Preppy Jackjack

Dear Preppy Jackjack,

That is a great question! With the constant evolution and re-designing of brands, I don’t like to exclude specific brands from the realm of preppydom. You never know, maybe even Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. or Rock & Republic might turn preppy one day. That being said, there are some things to keep in mind when searching for great clothes. Look for classic styles that cover all of the three P’s; pretty, preppy, and perky. You want quality items that won’t fall apart in the washing machine. Try to avoid overly shiny or sparkly material as well as polyester. Also look for brands that don’t skimp on fabric. Some of my favorite goto preppy brands are J. Crew, Lilly, Lacoste, Vineyard Vines, Ralph Lauren, and Old Navy (for basic tanks, cardis and ts). The Preppy Princess sells darling preppy accessories.
