I think its perfectly cool to mix styles. I have seen many cool kids pull of this look, emo or goth makeup and spiked hair paired with a plaid shirt and skinny jeans. I would steer clear of the pastels and go for bolder colors to really emphasize the contrasting styles. For NYE I paired a red plaid shirt and black mini skirt with a big chunky black chain link necklace. I thought it was pretty badass.
