Hello Preppy Girl!

I know all of the fundamentals to being the perfect prep, however; I have always wondered about makeup. Should us preppy girls wear makeup everyday, or even at all? If we’re in school, what type of makeup should we wear? And what brands and stores do you recommend? Thanks in advance! I love your blog!

Xo,
Prep Pulchritude

Dear Prep Pulchritude,
That is a great question! I’m really not a makeup expert but I think it’s totally fine to wear makeup just as long as you don’t wear too much. The goal of makeup is to enhance your natural beauty. For school or during the day, I would pair down or keep a very simple makeup routine, maybe a little mascara, neutral colored eyed shadow (if you want to wear it), and a little lip gloss. Don’t worry about using foundation, you really don’t need it for everyday wear. Some women like to wear a little tinted moisturizer to even out their skin tone. For a night out, try lipstick or lip gloss, eye shadow, mascara and a little blush, or bronzer in the summer. Steer clear of bronzer after October and don’t go too dark, a little goes a long way.

I have always shopped at the Clinique counter in Nordstrom. They do a great job selecting the right colors for you, especially for a tough thing like foundation. Also, they have some fun products that won’t totally break your budget. For eye shadow, and mascara, I go to Target and buy inexpensive brands like Cover Girl, Maybelline, and Physicians Formula – I love their eye shadows.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Dear Preppy Girl,

I just moved to a new city and I would like to create the impression of being preppy. Do you have any tips on how to achieve this transformation?

Love Always,
Rookie Prep

Dear Rookie Prep,
Making the move to a new city is always tough. Since you are still unpacking, its a great time to assess your wardrobe. Divide it into 3 categories, preppy, not preppy, and basics. Figure out what items you need to create some preppy outfits. Look for items like colorful polo shirts, cardigans, capris, and jeans. Preppy accessories like gingham and needlepoint belts, grosgrain watch bands, hairbands, and tote bags, are a great way to round out an outfit. I suggest reading a few preppy books like True Prep to learn more about being preppy. If you like sports, consider joining a field hockey or tennis team. That is a great way to meet fellow preps. And remember to smile!

Good luck!

Dear Preppy Girl,

I’ve been surfing your site for a while and I find it helpful. I’m not quite on my own and I was wondering if you could give me a few tips on how busy people do the preppy thing. It seems like you have a job and decide your own schedule and I don’t. I’m almost done with high school and I would love some headstarts for the quick life preppy. Thanks so much.

- Busy Beginner

Dear Busy Beginner,
That’s fantastic that you are getting set for the quick preppy life. My biggest tip is organize your wardrobe! Always plan your outfits a day or two in advance. That way your clothes will be cleaned and ironed when you need them. Have clothes that take you from day to night and from chilly workplaces to the warm outdoors. Look for clothes that you can easily layer like a sleeveless shirt. By putting a cardigan over it, it’s office-appropriate. Add some fun jewelry and a clutch for a night on the town. Scarfs are another accessory that can quickly cover up a low cut top and they add some color and variety to your wardrobe. Shop for basics like neutral colored skirts and pants, they are always in style. You can dress them up with colorful shirts, cardigans, and accessories. Also, always keep a pair of flip-flops, a bathing suit, and a towel in you car. You never know when you might need it!

My other tip is try to pack your own lunches and snacks. Not only are they healthier but they save you money. A reusable water bottle is another great way to save money and it’s better for the environment. And be sure to schedule time every week to have some fun, workout, and relax! Mark it in your calendar as if it was a real appointment.

Good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Dear Preppy Girl,

Lately I’ve been extremely disappointed at the lack of preppy guys I’ve been seeing in my city. Given, I live in a city where most guys have a higher drug intake than oxygen but still I should be able to at least see a fellow prep around. Do you have any tips on how or where to meet preppy guys? Because I have to tell you, being a single prep is about as fun as losing your Sperrys : (

Thanks!
Looking for Love

Dear Looking for Love,

That is a great question, I feel your preppy pain. I’m sorry to hear about the lack of datable guys. Finding a great preppy guy can be like finding a Lilly dress at Loehmann’s, but once you finally find it, its well worth the wait. I suggest taking group golf, tennis, or sailing lessons. Not only are they fun, but people are always looking for tennis partners, a foursome for golf, or a sailing crew. Even if there are no cute guys in the class, lessons are a great way to meet some new preps who might have some datable friends. Or sign up for racquetball or squash group at your gym. A local lacrosse game is another good place to meet preppy guys. Try asking a cute boy some questions about the game. If you like running, join a running club, that is another low pressure place to meet new people.

If sports are not your forte, try breaking out of your routine. Visit new coffee shops. If you have a dog, start hanging out at the local dog park. Dogs are a great conversation starter. If clothing is your passion, get a part time job at a preppy clothing store, you will be sure to meet every preppy guy in the area.

I hope that helps!

Hi Preppy Girl,

First things first, I love your blog! It’s so cute and helpful. I have a quick question: do real preps consider Abercrombie & Fitch “preppy”? I love timeless pieces like cardigans and blazers but I’m not sure if Abercrombie is preppy or not.

Thanks!
Fashion Conscious Prep

Dear Fashion Conscious Prep,

I love timeless pieces too, they never go out of style! Instead of shopping by brand, I suggest looking at the overall design of the clothing. Look for good material and classic tailoring. Abercrombie & Fitch does design some preppy-inspired clothing, however; it is not considered a traditionally preppy brand. Generally, preppy brands are more modest, clothing that you can visit your grandparents in. A few of the traditionally preppy brands include: Lilly Pulitzer, Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Burberry, Lacoste, and Sperry.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.
